In the 90s, a Japanese developer called Yukihiro Matsumoto – after struggling to find a programming language that was both powerful and easy to use – decided instead to create his own. Ruby was born. It was first released publicly in 1995, however didn’t gather much momentum until about ten years later, when Ruby on Rails was revealed to the world.
Rails’ creator, David Heinemeier Hansson (often known as DHH), had been working at the company 37signals (now Basecamp) to create a project management application in Ruby, and built a custom web framework to help speed along the process.
It was this that he eventually released at the end of 2005 as Ruby on Rails – the full-stack, open source framework which propelled Ruby into popular usage.
Since then, Ruby (along with Rails) has earned its place as one of the most commonly used programming languages, being extremely suited to building web applications for startups and small businesses, as well as a whole host of larger projects.
According to IEEE Spectrum (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ monthly magazine), Ruby is currently the eighth most popular programming language in the world.
